Super cold halls.
Resilient energy.

A proposed approach to data-centre cooling and energy resilience, using one Hydrocarbon Recovery Unit (HRU) for gas liquefaction and dedicated cooling, with onsite LNG storage supporting generation.

Application under developmentAkashic is exploring this HRU-based application. Each project requires site-specific technical validation and integration design.

01 / THE GROWING NEED

More computing.
Greater demands.

AI, cloud services and digital infrastructure place growing demands on data-centre power and heat removal. Cooling capacity, energy availability and continuity must be considered together.

Akashic’s proposed application brings two functions together in one HRU: liquefying natural gas for onsite LNG storage and supplying a dedicated cooling loop. The stored LNG can support generation when grid electricity or pipeline gas is interrupted or constrained.

02 / THE COOLING CONCEPT

One HRU.
A dedicated cooling loop.

Natural gas enters the HRU and leaves as LNG for storage. The same unit would supply the dedicated cooling loop for the “super cold halls” concept, through a thermal interface to controlled data-hall cooling, with a return to the HRU.

The aim is precise heat removal. Hall conditions and cooling-fluid temperatures would follow the requirements of the selected IT equipment. The proposed HRU application must be validated against the site’s thermal load, controls and operating requirements.

One HRU. Two functions. One site strategy.

Conceptual application · not an engineering design

One HRU for natural gas liquefaction and dedicated data-hall cooling Natural gas flows into one Hydrocarbon Recovery Unit, then leaves for LNG storage. The same HRU supplies a dedicated cooling loop to controlled data-hall cooling, with a return to that HRU. Stored LNG flows onward to vaporization, gas-fired power generation and electrical supply. This is a proposed high-level application. The dedicated cooling circuit returns to that same HRU.

Two functions come from one HRU: natural gas liquefaction into LNG storage, and a dedicated cooling supply with a return path. Stored LNG can then supply the generation pathway.

03 / ENERGY RESILIENCE

A fuel reserve.
A resilience strategy.

LNG from the HRU, stored onsite, can provide fuel for appropriately designed gas-fired power generation. LNG is vaporized back into gas before use in compatible engines or turbines.

This reserve can support a site strategy for grid outages, constrained pipeline capacity or gas-supply interruptions. Storage, replenishment, generation and electrical transfer must be sized and coordinated for the intended duty.

Pipelines are not storage.

Fuel availabilityMatch onsite storage and delivery arrangements to the required operating period.

Electrical continuityCoordinate generation with the site’s transfer systems, controls and power architecture.

Cooling continuityDesign cooling redundancy for maintenance and failure conditions alongside the energy system.
